Day of the Girl Child 2023

Day of the Girl Child 2023

Today, on the International Day of the Girl, we come together to celebrate the incredible potential and resilience of girls worldwide. In Lesotho, we have seen the challenges young girls face, but we have also been witness to their boundless strength and determination to overcome these challenges.

In honour of Unicef's theme for this year,
Invest in Girl's Rights, here are some ways the Pearl Program makes investments in the lives of girls in Lesotho:

  • Helping girls understand their rights, AND educating boys and men (in our other programs) on how to uphold the rights of women and girls
  • Supporting girls to become strong, confident leaders in their schools and communities
  • Promoting education and helping girls make smart choices for their futures
  • Educating girls on the signs of gender-based violence and human trafficking an HIV/AIDS prevention
  • Helping girls avoid child, early and forced marriage

Honour Day of the Girl with strong, inspiring women in your life!

In the spirit of female empowerment, a group of 13 lovely ladies got together for a pearl-themed women's weekend! Here they are donning their matching white signature bracelets. This International Women's Day, purchase a bracelet for yourself and for an inspiring women or girl in your life. Each time you wear your bracelet you'll be reminded of the collective strength of women and girls around the world!

Who makes the bracelets?

A top-seller for Pearls4Girls, these beautiful bracelets are made in Ottawa with the help of elementary and high school students! These fun-filled sessions are informative for students who also get to learn about the Pearl Program while taking in a bracelet-making workshop. To run your own bracelet-making party or to get a school involved, send an email to pearl@pearls4girls.org

What's new with the Pearl Girls?

This year's cohort of 100 girls are in the middle of their program sessions. The girls love visiting the two Help Lesotho centres on one weekend each month where they learn valuable life skills, build friendships and of course, have tons of fun! Watch our recent TikTok video that takes you through a training day with the Pitseng group!

Together, let's continue to support and empower girls in Lesotho, ensuring they have the opportunities and resources to reach their full potential!
